Memory and Music

Tom Ragland playing guitar

I lead weekly music and memory sessions with Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, and it is a truly moving experience to watch familiar songs act as an anchor to a person's memory and identity.

Often, a patient may appear entirely non-verbal, only to come alive when a familiar melody begins, singing every word right along with the music, or tearing up with a heartfelt, ‘Thank you, thank you.’ Beyond the patients themselves, these sessions offer a much-needed moment of stress relief and connection for caregivers. As language slowly fades, music has a unique, beautiful way of connecting the finite with the infinite.
